In this episode Lauren talks with parent coach, wilderness therapist, and author Krissy Pozatek, about how to navigate the polarities of parenting, including control/neglect, enmeshment/abandonment, and rigidity/chaos; using Brave Parenting tools that help us model and foster resilience.

Some key tools include:

  • Increasing our own tolerance for discomfort so that we can model and teach facing issues and growing from them rather than fixing or avoiding.

  • Allowing our children opportunities to solve their own problems, while remaining present and willing to help when asked, which is different from stepping in and solving or fixing for our kids.

  • Becoming more conscious of our own fears and triggers, of the times in which we are most tempted to “lay leather,” meaning to fix or solve for our kids rather than support them in “building moccasins,” meaning listening and giving help when asked while witnessing our children explore and experiment with their own solutions to their problems.

  • Prioritizing ourselves and our own life’s journey and being a loving and present guide for our children as they travel their own parallel path, which is different than trying to walk their path for them or unconsciously ask them to join us on our preferred path.

  • Remembering to have lots of compassion for ourselves and our children as we learn and grow alongside each other.
