45: Parenting Myth #7: Parents Need to be in Control

Guests: Conscious Parenting Coaches Angelica Bastida & Kelly O’Loughlin

This myth is my absolute FAVORITE! The myth that “parents need to be in control” is both culturally pervasive AND extremely destructive.  I see this as the “macro myth” that everything in Conscious Parenting connects to in some way.  Understanding and unwinding our relationship with control has the power to transform everything.

This is the last episode in our 8-episode series on Conscious Parenting and the myths that Dr. Shefali Tsabary so beautifully distinguished in her book, The Awakened Family.

To bring this myth to life, we are joined by two inspiring Conscious Parenting Coaches who generously share their own authentic stories of seeing this myth and transforming their parenting and their lives: Angelica Bastida & Kelly O’Loughlin.

In this episode we talk about:

  • How our very earliest experience with our children – childbirth – can help us see the myth of control

  • Where our desire to control comes from and how pervasive it is in our lives

  • Stories of how we seek to control our children’s’ thoughts, emotions and actions

  • How learning to give up control can transform your life – as a parent and beyond

About Angelica Bastida

Angelica Bastida had her first spiritual awakening in 2012, when she became a mother. Angelica knew then that she wanted to parent differently: she wanted to stay away from worry, control and guilt. She remembers feeling deep in her heart the need to question it all. It took Angelica several years of inner work and formal training to find her path to parenting in a conscious way.

In 2019, Angelica was trained by Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a world-renowned clinical psychologist and wisdom teacher; and the pioneer in Conscious Parenting. Angelica’s training to become a Conscious Parenting Coach was rigorous and intense and had a profound effect on her. It literally transformed how she sees life and others.

It has become Angelica’s passion to share this wisdom. She helps mothers and fathers have a more joyous parenting experience. Through Angelica’s coaching, parents are able to rediscover their authentic self and heal their emotional wounds so they can better connect with their loved ones, especially their children. Parents learn to use their inner wisdom as a compass they can trust and see their children as their best teachers in consciousness. For Angelica, there is nothing more fulfilling than to walk alongside parents that are going through the exciting journey of parenting.

About Kelly White O’Loughlin

Kelly has always been a seeker, passionate about understanding people and connections, which lead her to pursue a career in counseling. Kelly has a Master of Education in Counseling and Sport Psychology. For the past two decades, her focus has been on supporting children, teens and families. In her personal journey Kelly became a parent, began exploring Eastern practices and continued her quest of self discovery.

One major turning point was working in a large high school which allowed Kelly to see a diverse group of students and families. It was clear that teens wanted to be understood by their parents and parents wanted to be connected to their teens. But there was a disconnect. Kids were communicating with their behavior, lack of behavior, or what was seen as misbehavior. It was like Morse Code and adults were not given the key. This is why Kelly became a conscious parenting coach, to share a unique road map that blends western psychology and eastern philosophy. Where connection is at the center and transforms relationships.
